Is it safe to start my car, then take the key out the ignition while still running?

you can do that but the steering wheel and brakes will be locked.
a friend of mine had a mini cooper and did that on a highway and he died and i survived because we smashed into a truck.
 
I want to do this becasue I don't want to sit in my car while it warms up... and I live in an apartment so I don't want to wait downstairs either... would it be safe to start the car take the key out the ignitions then lock the car doors while the cars still running?
My car does not stop when I take the key out...
Ok.. well maybe not... I was able to do that in my old car.. n/m it prob wont work =D opps.
