Is it required by federal law that LEO remove weapons prior to entering a jail,

prison, or other secure area? If so, could you point me to a website showing the law?
I work at a local hospital on the psych floor. We are considered a detention facility by the state. As such, it is my understanding that police must disarm before entering (lock boxes are provided) because we have potentially dangerous people. I know that it is at least policy in our local jail to disarm. Or, is it a state by state law? Thanks
 
No law exists for this that I know of. This is usually policy spelled out by the director of the various facilities. The most common is the jails. The Sheriff makes it policy that if you want to enter the secure areas of his jail then you will secure your weapon before entering. This is common procedure and is not normally a problem for LEO's.
 
It is a question of local law and the policy of the facility. If Andy of Mayberry has a policy of allowing armed cops in his jail, no law precludes that policy. If some armed cop shows up and Andy refuses to let them in while armed, no law prohibits (or mandates) that policy.
