Everytime I read a programming tutorial, it says to learn Python and Perl first.
I already learned Visual Basic to get a grasp on basic programming concepts. I can write XHTML and CSS, and I'm learning Java. Is it necessary for me to learn Python? I can't think of any modern applications for it.
Clarification: What benefits may I reap from learning Python in particular?
