Is it practical to attend medical school while serving in the military?

Hi everyone,

This question is directed toward Guard/Reserve status, not active duty military.

I'm curious as to whether or not this is even possible. Full time medical student with one weekend a month and two weeks a year?

Of course there's always the possibility of being deployed to interrupt your education (which would be absolutely detrimental in med school). But I've heard of some sort of pseudo "safety-net" that can help in ensuring you won't be deployed while you are working toward your education provided you meet certain criteria. Is this based on any kind of fact?

Even if that is true, is this still possible?

Why not just let the military pay for your school? If you're willing to deploy it may as well be as a doctor. All services are in need of MD's so there are many programs available where they'll pay for your schooling and you go into the service as a doctor on active duty. You may as well go active anyway since the reserves and guard are being deployed on a consistent basis. The big benefit is that when you go in, you'll be an officer.
 
possible sure. practical? not so much. med students i have known don't have time to tie their shoes.

but here's something: doctors and lawyers are eligible for direct commissions.
