Certainly it can be done. Just about all vehicles have some sort of fuse or fusible link on the existing wire between the battery and alternator. If you're upgrading the Big 3, you'd be installing a new wire, which should have its own fuse. You don't have to remove the existing wire; you can leave it in place and add your own wire.
