After the atrocity that was the previous comments section on Yahoo news, I can't believe that they've enabled it again. Between the racism, misogyny, homophobia, and astroturfing by every political crank, I can't take it anymore. The comments section is set high enough that you can't read the bottom of the article without seeing the comments. Unless I can turn these off, I won't be coming back to Yahoo News. And before I get a lecture from a mental midget about 'just don't read it', I read really fast, and in blocks, so I can't always avoid it.
Even if I could avoid it by turning it off, I have a problem with Yahoo allowing this negative discourse to take place publicly. The idiots currently posting on the comments section feed each others hate, which reinforces their negative values, and I assume that Yahoo is making money off of this because of the site traffic raising their stats. The word is already out on several white power forums and religious sites for their members to come to Yahoo and 'spread the word'. It's no secret that several people who worked for Yahoo supported the efforts to ban gay marriage in California, so I have to wonder if the racist and homophobic comments are allowed on the site are part of this same agenda. Google may be evil, but Yahoo may be worse. Federal laws exist that prohibit supporting hate speech, and I wonder if Yahoo is violating those laws by allowing these posts to remain on their site.
