Is it possible to "re-train" a 5-speed manual 2003 Toyota Echo to get better

performance out of it? I have a nice Echo that gives me great gas millage, but she has no pep. I purchased the car new in 2003 and don't remember if when I first got her she had more get-up-and-go or not. I know the other day, I was trying to merge into traffic. I down shifted from 5th into 3rd, put my foot to the floor, and still had no excelleration. I know that some cars out there have adaptive "learning" chips in them, and it's possible to "re-train" these cars to get better performance out of them. I don't know if my Echo has such a thing, but if it does, does anyone know how to teach my car to be a bit more peppy? I know that asking for ~45 MPG and a bit of "zoom-zoom" is a lot to ask, but I'd like to try! Thanks in advance.

If you had the gas pedal to the floor in 3rd after downshifting, the car was making its maximum power at those RPMs - that's as fast as it can go at that time. The "adaptive" portion of the ECU programming does things like varying spark timing and valve timing (if your car has variable valve timing) fuel mixture etc., at part-throttle to improve fuel economy and efficiency, but at full throttle the ECU is already doing whatever it is programmed to do to deliver maximum power.

There's not really anything you can change as far as driving style to get it to make more power than it already does if you downshifted to the proper lowest gear and floored it. You CAN go out and get aftermarket computer "chips" and other mods like intake and exhaust to get a little more hp, but the car is already making maximum power when floored and in the appropriate lowest gear as it is right now (stock).

Other "adaptive" features you hear about often refer to an automatic transmission that can "learn" a driver's driving style and change shift points accordingly. This can improve part throttle performance somewhat, but again, when the gas pedal is floored the transmission will downshift to the lowest appropriate gear and the engine will make it's rated hp at those RPM regardless of how you drive it otherwise.

When was the last time you gave it a treat?
Like spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter.
Is it due for a timing belt?
Your car may be suffering from lack of attention.
I don't know your shift points, or what speed you were doing - your lack of acceleration could be due to the rev limiter. Try fourth next time.
It could also be that you have a bad clutch. Did the RPM's go up with no increase in speed? If so you need a clutch.

Automatic transmissions can have adaptive technologies that adjust shift points to an individual drivers style. Auto transmissions can have this technology because the car does all of the work and its all computer controlled.

Your vehicle has a manual transmission. Changing gears is 100% reliant on human input. The "adaptive technology" is between your ears, not in the car. That being said, an Echo is an Echo and a surplus of horsepower it does not have. Assuming that all maintenance is up to date and the engine is in proper working order what you have is what you have.
