pay from the start? like if I went to a law firm to get advice, would I need to pay from the get go for the service, or is there normally a free consultation service where I could discuss my issues etc. Thanks in advance.

Most law firms will offer a free consultation, generally a half hour. Your best bet would be to call around to find out.
