is it possible to connect my pc to a wireless router using a dongle, to avoid ugly wires across the lounge?

currently i use a modem to connect to tiscali via a ethernet cable, what im wanting to do is disconnect this modem and use an old wireless netgear router i have lying about (tho i dont have the cd it came with any more, i know im dense), i also have a usb wireless dongle(cd still in box so am not totaly dense lol), is it possible to use these two i conjuction to achieve having a truely wirless dektop, any help or link would be great thanks

The modem will have to connect to your wireless access point/wireless router and the dongle will be slower than a pcmcia/internal card, I'm against USB wireless dongles, they're significantly slower than wireless which is already half the speed of a wired network.

As slowpoke said yes it is possible. After you have your router set up just get a USB wireless adapter and follow the instructions and you should be good to go.

If you want a improvement over a wireless USB device get yourself a Ethernet wireless bridge. It is a bit harder to configure to your network but will give you good speeds for just about anything. I use both connections (wired + wireless) on various PC's and only some and I mean some games are noticeably laggier on wireless over wired a example is battlefield 2.

Also as I mentioned wireless bridges that you plug into your Ethernet port I have gotten a lot better performance over standard USB wireless adapters.

A few things if you plan on using the normal USB wireless adapter which most people don't know and don't do is set your router to only a G or N frequency depending on which router/card you will be getting. Make sure its not set to the work with mix mode A +B+G frequencies cause you can lose up to 60% of your wireless performance cause of that. So only use the Mix mode as its called if you really need to use it with a old B or A device. But if your buying anything current it will never have a B or A wireless requirement.
