Is it possible to connect an xbox 360 without a wireless router?

Ok so i recently bought the xbox wireless adapter, anyway setting it up seems to be a problem, basically im asking can you actually connect wireless to live, by using just a modem connected to a laptop with wireless capabilities, which is downstairs, to my 360 upstairs, to which the adapter is connected to, or do i need a router?

If so how do you do it?
