...United States? The last big counter-culture movement was in the 60's with the hippie movement. It just seems that we are heading closer to another huge anti-mainsteam type of progressive movement. Something like the hippie era. Because it seems todays youth, (me being one of them -16) are ready to get away from this dead beat cycle of thinking that you can live american dream, when most of us (if our parents aren't wealthy, which most of America is middle class) will not even get out of the area that we live in. I meet more and more people my age and younger every day that have the same mind-set. My group of friends are going to take a trip. We have no clue where but the destination doesn't matter. It's the journey that counts. What also makes me excited is that I have found more youth that are doing the same.

What is your thoughts? Counter-culture movement or wishful thinking?

That counter culture started with the beatniks, the general flavor of that movement has been chronicled in many books, most notably "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac.
Do you see the similarity to your situation?
Contrary to popular belief; the hippies and beatniks were not passive drifters just looking for a good time. (at least not most of them.) They were outraged by what they saw as passivity to the very obvious (to them) injustices and general sheep mentality pervasive in our society. They knew that "they got the guns, but we got the numbers" and knew that with a united front they could make the changes they saw as necessary. They grew up in the '50's and 60's in a world torn by war, and fighting was not a stranger to them, as it seems to be to the youth of today. It's not your fault, the media has you conditioned to think that it's right and correct to look to the government to right all your wrongs.
They've made it too hard for any of you to stand up and make any of this right.
 
Yep,Thomas Jefferson even said that revolution is good for a country and that a revolution usually happens every 20 years;whether it be big or small.

i think he said every forty years,i can't remember.
 
yeah it's called the emo movement for a person's right to cry himself to sleep without beeing judged.

I think it all depends on trend.
 
I've been wondering the same thing. I think the hippie movement was fascinating. I don't think there will be a huge movement among the younger generation soon, as it's happening already in smaller cycles. I am personally getting away from mainstream stuff like that as well, and as far as what I think, I think it's just wishful thinking. Our generation is just 'evolving' slowly, rather than calling for a huge counterculture movement..
 
The thing about the youth movements of the past is that they were a rejection of the social values of their parents' generation. Today's society varies so widely that you'd be hard pressed to find anything to rebel against, except in the opposite direction. Bear in mind that the people who lead the hippie movement are becoming grandparents now. They raised children who followed in their liberal footsteps. The only true revolution in terms of societal values would be towards a stronger sense of patriotism and conservative views. It was with just such a nationalistic movement that Hitler rose to power.
