is it possible that my cell phone case is the reason that screen won't work?

Take the case off. If the phone works when you do that, then the case is the cause of it, and you need to find a better case. Phones aren't required to work with cases, so going back to the store and saying "my phone doesn't work with this case" will not convince your phone company to replace your phone.

As far as transferring photos, it depends on the phone company and what kind of phone you have and will get. You should back up your pics to your computer anyway (and then to some online service like Flickr or Picasa or Facebook or Myspace) since you could always lose your phone or your computer.
 
i have had my motorola rival since september and a case on it since december and after i got the case my phone has had problems with the screen not wanting to turn on, but i could fix it but now no matter how much i try the scree won't turn on and i can't see anything unless i'm in the right light and even then it's really hard to see. what should i do?? and if i have to trade it in will i be able to get/transfer my photos to the new phone??
