Is it possible? Getting "ripped" and "defined" with only bodyweight exercises?

OK, so basically, after training at my Karate club... I was talking to the Grandmaster about various things. The Grandmaster and I share a friendly relationship unlike a traditional teacher-student relationship, so we talk about all kinds of things. Anyway, during the conversation, the topic of strength training came up. We then talked about strength training with weights versus strength training with bodyweight.

Then, the Grandmaster says to me: "I'm 63 years old and I've still got a eight-pack. I run 5km daily in the morning. I do push-ups, pull-ups/chin-ups, crunches, etc. daily in the afternoon. I still feel like I'm in my 20s."

After that, he shows me his abs. Gosh, that took me by surprise.

I sh-t you not, fellow Yahoo! Answers folks, this old man has a crazy set of abs. Not only that, his is "ripped" (or "defined" or "cut") as hell. His abs, pecs/chest, biceps, etc. all look like they were chiselled by a master carpenter or something.

I asked him about doing strength training with weights and he goes: "I've always done bodyweight exercises my whole life. That's the way my master did it and that's the way I'll do it. I've never done strength training with weights - that's White people stuff." --> My Grandmaster is Japanese (hence, the White people reference).

I figured that I couldn't convince him to take up strength training with weights because, well, 1) he doesn't seem to need it, 2) he's really really old fashioned and traditional, and 3) I don't think he'd take my advice anyway (haha).

So, fellow Yahoo! Answers martial artists (and fitness enthusiasts)... do you think it is possible to be "ripped" (or "defined" or "cut") with only bodyweight exercises? What are your opinions? Have you had similar encounters with old martial arts masters who only swear by bodyweight exercises?
