Is it okay to use a filter in a 4.5 gallon tank with small gold fish?

I just bought two, small goldfish. One is about a 1/2 inch, the other a little over an inch. Anyway, I set up the tank with a filter and put the fish in. They seem to really be struggling by the current the filter makes. Is this okay? The filter is a small one. With goldfish is it better to not have a filter? I don't want to mess this up. Can't wait to hear some answers!

Those small goldfish, if regular, will eventually need a 55g+ tank so they don't get stunted and die early. Fancy goldfish would only need a 30g.

All goldfish need a filter. Hell they need DOUBLE filtration! Goldfish are large, messy, pondfish and a tank with inadaquate or no filtration fouls fast and kills even faster.

Goldfish are carp that can grow to over a foot and live 20 years in a pond. In a small tank you can keep them alive for a while, but soon the get stunted and die young, unless they die of their own waste first. There is a myth that fish stop growing to suit their environment and that's totally true, I mean, it won't grow when it's dead.

your tank is better for a fish that is not meant to grow big and is good alone, like a betta. Filters are crucial to keeping a tank healthy, but in small tanks those hanging power filters are not very good because of all that water flow, and filters run by air pumps are much better.

I assume you got comet goldfish. If you did, they look small now, but comets can grow to 12 in. 2 comets will need atleast a 55gal and wont even be their happiest with that. And goldfish are messy so if you got a 55 gal, youd need like a 65 gal filter.

If you got a fantail or fancy fish of somesort, you will need atleast 40 gal for the 2. But you cant add anymore and those fish will die in a few months.

goldfish are very dirty and must have a filter, they are struggling cause they are babies, but will get stronger and be fine. but you will need to get a bigger tank sooner than later. goldfish need ten gallons each or thirty gallons for two because they grow huge and are high ammonia producers even when small.
