Is it okay to paint/draw from imagination?

Is it a bad start? Ive always painted copying from pictures ( THANKS TO MY art TEACHER grrrr) when i was a kid and am trying (very hardly') to break from that habit. OR should i continue painting real life coz if i paint in imagination my pics wont look realistic or something liek that
