Is it okay to open a slow-cooker (crockpot) while it's cooking?

I'm afraid the meat might be drying out a little, so I want to mix it in with the rest of the ingredients. If I open the slow-cooker, stir everything around then put the lid back on, will it be okay, or will I let all the steam out or whatnot? Thanks.
