is it ok to take a pregnancy test while your mean to be on your period?

i was due for my period around the 9th and still havent had it, i havent had unprotected sex but have done other stuff, this morning i took a pregnancy test (using the first urine of the day) and it came out negative, would this be a reliable result?
i said i didnt have unprotected sex!! read the details please..
