Is it ok to say fire and police are over paid?

Oi! Oi!

You're talking about administration problems though. Cops dont have a say in teacher salaries or # of open positions. It sounRAB to me like you think the politicians who decide education budgets are overpaid (and I would 100% agree).

I just can't understand what a deputy district chief does that requires a city to pay like 25 of them 150k a year.

How many fucking fires are there a year?

I'm pretty sure thats where it comes from.

what rubs my ass raw is the fact the guys all work together to call out collectively so others can collect over time, then they swap positions and that group calls out so the others collect over time

so go be a fire chief.

There's way more egregious examples of overpaid employees (see: pro sports) in this world to claim that fire/police/teachers, etc. are overpaid.

in my town we have:

6 fire engines
2 ladders
2 rescue trucks
2 brush units
5 araber lamps.

and..

ready?

22 chief/command vehicles. WHAT UP fire? we're gona blow you out with our exhaust.

Pro athletes get paid based on exlusivity of talent and demand by the public.

Firemen and Police get paid based on their union's ability to lobby.

Your comparison sucks.

i gotta imagine that a lot of people get paid well in large part thanks to the lobbying power of some group they belong to

with these guys, it's more visible i guess since they're lobbying for people.

I grew up in CA and most of my concern about it comes from the things I've seen/experienced there with regard to public servant salaries/disparities.

Obviously the administration/budgets are fucked, but it's kind of common sense that something is wrong when police can make 60-80k/year starting in CA/MA yet teachers make 30-40k with more education.

standard.

I think we should be paying high salaries to police, fire, teachers, etc. but we should also be mandating higher educatiion, physical, and training requirements to justify.

If cops make shit pay you will attract the worst group of people to be police.

I'd jump at the ability to join a PD, and I have a CJ degree from a good school in Boston, but it's near impossible to get in, especially being white.

It's regional.

I know firefighters who are captains with 20 years and barely make 45 (mom) on the other hand, my wifes uncle is just your typical Fire/EMT and makes over 120K in SoCal.

I started at 38K. It didn't take me long to realize I was in the wrong industry.

Well I'd almost argue the opposite.

Currently you have a ton of cops without higher education being phased out of the force, and until recently military service has been weighted higher than a degree.
