is it ok to have a wired cage instead of a glass fish tank for my soon to be hamster?

my friend offered to give me her wire cage for free but my mom said no because the hamster will chew through it. but is that true or shopuld i raise 24 dollors for a glass cage? i need this asap tahnkyou
