Is it ok for an employer to discuss my personal medical history with other employees?

I am a person that works in the medical field...I am pregnant and I am having some complications. I needed to call in sick so I could go to the doctor and get checked out. The next day after visiting the doctor and being put on bed rest I went into my place of employment and several people came up to me asking me if I was still spotting? I am so furious that my personal medical problems is being told to everyone that I work with...Any advice?

I went into my job to turn in my Dr's note saying I'm unable to work. I called in sick to the person in charge of staffing. I am so furious that my personal medical problems is being told to everyone that I work with...Any advice?
 
You should check your employee handbook for information and review the Medical and Family Leave Act which addresses more than just pregnancy issues.

Call Human Resources and request "immediate and appropriate corrective action." It means you expect them to take action to ensure this never happens again. Supervisors are not allowed to discuss personal private medical issues with anyone. You are protected legally by the Medical and Family Leave Act and technically a case could be made for discrimination on the basis of gender.

Paperwork you sign authorizes your doctor to disclose medical information to certain parties. Make sure you didn't sign anything allowing disclosure. Typically a physician generates a letter for the patient to take to their employer which is then placed in a confidential personnel file. In the future, never discuss or provide medical "details" with anyone where you work. Keep it as vague as possible to ensure privacy.

The person in charge of staffing should be fired, but that's just my opinion.
