Is it normal for a small restaurant to make a profit in its first year?

I am doing a group project on opening a small restaurant, and we are wondering if it's normal, or even possible, to turn a profit in the first year. Please, if anyone has restaurant management experience, any help would be appreciated!
 
It is normal for a restaurant to not make money for the first SEVERAL years. If you are starting a brand new restaurant from scratch, it is basically impossible to make a profit because of the amount of start-up costs that will be incurred.
