Is it normal for a gold fish to live 5 years?

My friend won a gold fish at a fair like 5 years ago and he is still living and he is big! like 5 inches long (maybe, I really don't know, just big for a gold fish) If not how long do gold fish usually live in a tank.



Her tank is big, mine is more like gallon and a half, will he not live as long? My fish is the only one in the tank and she usually has a few fish in the tank at once.
I'm not planning on having lots of fish so thats why i dont have a big tank, plus I only keep one or two at a time.
 
Golds can live over twenty years. Goldfish won at fairs are usually comets and can get over 12 ikinches long. They are really pond fish or at least 55 gallon fish. But a twnety would do..for now.
 
Your tank is very small. I would suggest investing in a 10 gallon tank, then a 20 gallon. It is normal for goldfish to live 20+ years, so your friends goldfish is still young.
