No, not necessary. But, without a lid, there's a good chance the fish can jump out-and a lot of fish do jump, if you have cats-they'll go fishing, and your water will evaporate much more quicker then it would if there was a lid on it. You can also check around for a piece of glass to fit over the top, or even buy a piece of plexiglass fairly cheap from Lowes or something and cut that to fit.
