Is it my phone or At&t

I was thinking it was running through Nokia Messaging too. But, I cant find any way to set up email manually. It won't let me opt out of the Email Wizard. To make matters worse. It won't let me delete the previous gmail account. It looks like another hard reset is in my future. It still amazes me that Nokia continues to make email setup such a pain. When I got my Palm Pre a few weeks ago, all I had to do was enter my email address and password. It synced all emails, contacts, and calenders with no problems.

That's because WebOS, just like Android and iOS, all sync to Gmail flawlessly while Nokia touts their broken Mail for Exchange. They repeatedly say it's Google's issue but the other major operating systems do what they need to to make it work.

NM can be a pain. I had to delete me account to get it working properly on my N900 and so far, so good. However, I haven't fired up my E72 yet and know I will have to do a reset as there's no way to delete the account from the phone. Once you reset the NM account on Nokia's servers the connection between the servers and the device is broken and you can't delete the account since it needs to communicate back to the servers with the broken provision link.

Delete the current Gmail account. Create a new account and select Gmail but decline the NM agreement when prompted and it should set up a direct IMAP connection. If not, you may need to select "Other" and manually enter the Gmail server information. You can use the settings below.

I ended up having to do a complete hard reset again. My N86 wouldnt allow me to delete the current Gmail account. Every time I tried, it would hang at "deleting email account" (I let it sit for about an hour) So, I just did a hard reset and started over.

The N86 and E72 must have different versions of the email wizard. I remember when I had my E72 that I could decline the Nokia Messaging agreement and set things up manually. It doesnt work that way on the N86. I found some reference to setting up Mail for Exchange on the N86 by either taking out the sim or putting it in offline mode. I was able to set up MFE and my gmail account in offline mode. Everything is back to normal. But still seems somewhat slow.

For what its worth, I have 10 emails in my Gmail inbox. I use the email widget on the homescreen of the N86. When I click on the widget to go to the inbox, it takes 4-5 seconds before my inbox is fully opened and I'm able to select an email to view. I think part of the reason is I'm using fetch email, instead of always connected. Those users that are having smoother email experiences aren't waiting for their phones to connect to the server.

As a side note. I didnt install Taskman this time. I'm not sure, but it may have been slowing down my N86 for some reason. I know it would hang occassionally on a reboot, while Taskman loaded. Hopefully thats not true, Taskman is a great little app.

The IMAP solution can be a little slower as it needs to connect to the server to retrieve data. To speed things up a bit change the setting to download the entire message instead of just the header. This was causing issues with my E72 and the mailbox would routinely loose the entire mailbox. It's under Mailbox Settings, What to sync. I think the default retrieve setting is less than 2kB. Setting to body text and attachment has helped performance a bit.

thanks Gorgonesh. I already had it set to download the entire message. I can't imagine how long it would take me to read an email if I had to wait for it to download the rest of the message.

Does anyone have any experience with Emoze or Seven on S60 V3? I'm guessing I would lose the homescreen email widget, and I also read that I cant save emails to any other location other than C: Drive with 3rd party email clients? (not a real big deal, since I keep my inbox clean)

What if I changed my Gmail settings to POP? And reinstalled the gmail account on my phone. Do you think that would make things any faster? I dont have to have Imap, I usually clean up emails on my PC twice a day anyway. I would just have to do cleanup on the phone and the pc.
