Is it mean to put my whining five month old puppy in a crate in the living

room downstairs to sleep? I have a five month old puppy and so far he has been sleeping in a crate in our bedroom while our older dog sleeps in the bed with us. But he whines all throughout the night and it is very hard to ignore. So usually I end up getting up and taking him out to go potty two or three times. I am getting fed up with waking up at night and telling him to shut up. My bf wants to get a shock collar but I think they are mean. I am thinking about moving the crate downstairs and having him sleep there and just "cry it out" but I am wondering if that will just stress him out more and make it worse. Would I be doing a bad thing by moving him downstairs?

PS I dont need people telling me my older shouldnt be in the bed, that isnt my question anyway. Thats the way it and thats the way its going to be. Hes well behaved and we love having him there.

You should NEVER let a dog sleep on the bed with you. This shows them that they are your equal and they will think they can dominate you. Both dogs should sleep in their own beds. Yes, dogs are pack animals and you and your boyfriend are the pack leaders, but they still need their own sleeping area. Buy a dog bed and put the older dog and the puppy (in his crate) downstairs in the kitchen then put a baby gate in the doorway as a barricade. The older dog can keep the little one company. I'm not even going to talk about shock collars, you already know.

You are better to move him where you can't hear him than to keep taking him out because he is whining.

You are teaching your puppy that if he goes on long enough that he will get attention.

Try setting an alarm to wake up once at night to take him out if he still needs a night time potty break.

No, it's not mean at all. By moving your dog downstairs, the dog can whine and whine all he wishes but there will be no "reward", aka you taking him out of his crate. He will get used to it with time. It's also a chance for him to have his own independence. You don't want a dog waking you up in the middle of the night, I know how that is! Goodluck!

could you just more it outside your room and shut the door? I don't think an dog should be in your bed. This is sending mixed signals to the dogs.

maybe try moring the crate outside your room and ensure he's gone potty before bed,

Perhaps he needs more exercise, play, and training during the day/evening? If he were getting enough, he'd be too tired out to whine all night. A shock collar for a 5 month old puppy would be insane - rehome the dog before you consider doing that.

Moving the crate to a quiet place might help. You can also try an old fashioned wind-up alarm clock (loud ticking sound) next to the crate. I have found that a cover (old blanket) over the crate creates a cozy den-like environment. Make sure you take the pup out just before everyone goes to bed.
A shock collar will not make the dog quiet only fearful and will never be comfortable in the crate.
