Is it legal to ride a bicycle on a highway (I'm not asking about freeways)?

I've already considered the potential danger and thoroughly planned my route using google maps infamous street view ensuring I have space to ride.

The ride will be 191 miles in total. Just out of curiosity, how long do you think that will take? I figure it'll take a little under a full day with periodic breaks during the ride.
 
It depends on the highway. There may be local city ordinances or state laws that prohibit bicycles on certain roads.

I'm not a bicycle tourer, but a bicycle trip of 191 miles is probably a three to four day trip. Figure 60 to 80 miles a day with breaks as a rule of thumb. To do the distance your planning in one day will mean starting very early in the morning and finishing very late at night, or the next morning, with almost no breaks. Of course, it will also depend a lot on your bicycle and your physical conditioning.
