Should we debate Creationists?
On the one hand, it is important to counter the lies and misinformation and set the record straight.
On the other hand, it gives credence to their claims and may give the impression that there is debate within the scientific community. To a naive, uninformed audience, evolution is a difficult point to get accross; a charismatic Creationist could seem like the simpler, more reasonable idea.
I've been considering this after a discussion with my good (but rather naive) friend. She is not a religious person, but told me recently she remains 'neutral' or 'on the fence' regarding evolution because of the recent promotion and propaganda of creationists during Darwin Day. Hearing this I tried to explain how ignorant and misguided their claims are and realised that I probably came across to her just like any creationist preacher.
What are your thoughts?
