Is it illegal to have a car towed by police when the owner was there and didnt want it

towed? i took my x wifes car to go pick up our daughter because we where in a hurry and i just grabbed the keys, i went to pick her up and the police stopped behind me. they said to step out of the car because it needed to be towed. my x wife did not know i took the car and got in a taxi and quickly arrived and requested her car. She has never even had a ticket, didnt know I had borowed the car till i called, and what if a valet guy has taken it to park and got pulled over and went back to mexico.. what they could just keep it then since he didnt get his liscense streightened out!? please reply
