Is it illegal for an employer to discuss work performance to an outside party?

My husband works in a supermarket and instead of his employer discussing his work performance with my husband, the employer talked to my mother-in-law about it. Is there some law that protects employees against this? If this employer can talk about my husband's work performance with my mother-in-law, he can talk about it with anyone.

employer of your husband is not doing wrong as per law

What the employer did was unethical, unless your husband has signed a release form the employer should not even be permitted to discuss with you!
