Is it heartless to take photos at a funeral?

I know that people grieving don't really want a camera in their face but I work with a small local photographer and we've been called to a few funerals, we just have to make sure that we don't draw attention to ourselves or get in the way.
But what if the funeral was for a family member of the photographer? Is it bad to take photos at that funeral?
 
Well if it's your job to take pictures from there, I doubt people would be happy about it or accepting since the person's well... Yeah

People don't do it anyway, it's not like... bad legally but there's not much optimism for the people there
 
I have never, ever seen photographs taken at a funeral, except when it is of an important figure in a country. I would have thought that the last thing any body would want is a photograph of such an event.
