Is it hard to balance school sports and school work?

I want to join the basketball team in my school and im afraid that doing the sport will effect my grades. If it starts effecting my grades can i just quit the team? And was it hard for you (or someone you know) to balance the 2
 
Its not hard. Basketball will only be 2 or 3 hours each night. That still leaves plenty of time to do school work. And if you don't want to continue, you can quit. Its against the school rules for a coach to get mad at a kid for quitting if the reason is because of academics.
