I wonder if they charge by the hour or what? I just dont trust mechanics!! I have had horrible experiences in the past, one put a broken fuel pump in our car, and it was leaking gas, and we didnt even know it!! Until someone told me that my car smelled like gas. Anyways, well my 2002 oldsmobile alero has been giving me problems, there is some smoke that comes out from behind the steering wheel, this smoke comes out once in a while, and then the hazard light clicks non stop, and there has been alot of headlights brake lights etc. going out we constantly have to replace them. I just wonder if a mechanic whould charge us alot of money to look into that.

"I just dont trust mechanics"

Why? They're people, just like you. They're capable of being deceitful, or honest, just as you.

But if they're deceitful, you won't come back; WHICH HURTS THEIR BUSINESS. So why would it be in their best interest to mislead you?

Everyone loves to blame mechanics, but no one has the brain cells to realize that it would do no good for them to be anything less than honest. All it would do is cause them a loss of money. Completely the opposite of their goal.

Look at your example, they installed a broken fuel pump. Seeing as a fuel pump has internal parts, which CANNOT be seen, how would they know if it was broken or not, prior to install? Simple, they couldn't. So you're faulting them, for a faulty part. That makes a hell of a lot of sense.....

As far as a short, it depends on how hard it is to find. With a modern car, it could take hours to find it it.

Seeing as you have multiple things shorting out, I'm going to guess around 4-5 hours to find everything. Minimum.

Yes they charge hourly, It depends on how long it takes to find and repair the fault. If you dont like mech.s just get a manual and dig into it yourself. Was the car a flood car? It seems like you have alot of electrical issues.
