Is it emphasized in American culture to tell kids about their heritage?

Is it something considered "important" by most families in the USA? Do Grandparents take the time to do this? You see it in movies all the time: The Grandpa has his young nephew on his knee and is telling him old war-time stories...etc.

I've noticed that in my family, if the young'uns don't ask about the family history, usually the family won't tell that much about it. I really, really want to write everything down because what I've learned so far is just amazing. They're busy with other things, though, so I have to ask! :)

I know some cultures are really big on knowing your heritage and I'm just a little curious if this is part of American culture, too. Is this something that Grandparents worry about?

Thank you for your time and answers!
