Is it better to use chicken liver or baitfish in the pond that you will fish?

I do admit chicken liver works but its a one time use thing, therefore whatever is leftover goes to waste. If I use baitfish from the pond where I fish it is free and ALL I do is drop a fly in there and the panfish goes after it.
I am going for channel cats and bullheads, more likely channel cats because the biggest one I caught was only 2 ft. I want a bigger one
does that anise oil thing work? people swear by it but why would a catfish or any fish eat something that smells like candy

I would say that chicken liver works better for cats. just bring what you need, IE if you're looking to put 2 cats on the bbq bring 6 pieces of liver.

However, chunked bluegill works just as well i suppose.
