Is it better to go through life with optimism or realism?

What do you think? Are we better positioned if we prepare ourselves for the worst, or hope always for the best?
The realist being one who sees the world as it is, with no expectations that the world owes him or her anything. The middleground of sorts.

The optimist being one with a rosier, more hopeful view of the world, leaning towards positivity and idealism.
