Is it best to take a plea to a serious offence or go to trial? Knowing that

I am innocent.? I am scared as to the sentence I could get if I went to trial and the jury found me guilty. The plea offered was a much lighter sentence and was to the lesser charges only. I am innocent but the proscution has twisted everything to make me look really bad. I have never been in trouble with the police in my life. Can anyone give me some advise on this? thank you
