Is it bad to put wheel spacers on a Jeep?

i have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee... i was looking into widening my wheelbase and i was wondering if it is a good or bad thing for the vehicle? is it going to ruin my steering or anything at all?
 
Get negative dish rims (might be called something else) Rims that have the center portion moved in about two inches instead of dead center. They are common and easy to get.
 
Wheel spacers is a cheap way of doing it, but will work. Probably better to use wheels with backspacing and get some new tires. Either way it shouldn't mess with your steering (lift will do that!)
