Is it bad for a car if you change the gears when it's not turned on, just for practice?

I drive a stick shift, and I would imagine you should still put the clutch in so it doesn't do anything to screw up the transmission. Since the car isn't on, it shouldn't hurt the clutch or the transmission.

im trying to learn to drive, and i need to practice the placment of the gears, it probably sounds like a really dumb question, and when the car isnt on (stationary) and im changing gears, does it matter if my foot is on the clutch or not????
when i say the car isnt on, i mean the keys aren't even in the car,,, can i forget about the clutch, when im just practicing like that?
if i didnt have my foot on the clutch at all times, could have i destroyed the car??

what no one seems to be saying here is that it is a bad idea to be changing the gears in the vehicle without actually driving it......I locked one in gear because I was doing the same thing (with my foot on the clutch).....not only that but all the movement will wear the synchronizers out quicker.......bottom line don't do it.......

try shifting from the passenger seat while your dad or mom is driving.....I learned to shift this way with my fatherand grandfather and it will also give you a better feel as to when to change gears in relation to engine sounds and car movement......this is better for the car and a better teaching method!!!!!

Everyone knows how a gearbox is made up, if you are changing gear with engine off and no clutch, you could still effectively be forcing the gears and there is no lubrication. Always clutch the gears.
