Is it alright if my turtle is walking around in the vegetable garden?

I have been letting my turtle walk around my backyard, making sure he dries a little in the sun, just for a short amount of time to dry his shell periodically so he doesn't get shell rot. I was just wondering, since I've heard turtles carry salmonella, if it is safe for him to be walking around my growing vegies?

Yes, it's safe.

But, I once had some mysterious saw like marks in some of my cantaloupes. I thought my kids were poking them with a knife to see if they were ripe. So about three days after I gave my kids holy heck, I went out early in the morning to water and there was a desert tortoise trying to eat through a cantaloupe.

So, if you've got goodies in the garden that turtles eat, I'd at least protect those plants.
