Is it against the law to lie on a resume?

So i have no experience at all and never had a job. Thats a huge thing when trying to get a job thats not mcdonalds. So i figure ill just lie and say i worked at a supermarket or something.

Should i do this?
 
No. Don't. It's not against the law, but you will not get a job lying. Background checks are pretty thorough. There won't be any record of you receiving a paycheck. They'll know you made things up.

What's wrong with starting out at McDonald's? You don't have to stay there.
 
Why lie? You might be surprised to know that at times, employers like new employees with no experience. That way you don't bring expectations, attitudes and bad habits from your previous job. They can train you to do things their way. Be honest, while most places do not verify past employment, they have the right to and just might do it the time you lie about it.
 
No such law. However, since you are asking this question, have you ever heard of a reference check??? If so, do you understand what that is? If not, let me explain...they verify your work experience. So, how are you going to explain your stupidity then????
 
Depends who you are lying to. Lying to get a government job/security clearance can land you in the pokey.

Saying you worked somewhere when you haven't any of the skills that you would have learned by working there is kind of pointless. They will soon find out you don't know what you are doing and fire you.

If you have no job experience, you need to emphasize traits and skills you learned from other places. Like: "I am great with people and very friendly and would make a good receptionist or counter person taking orders".

Lying is always a bad idea. If you want to have a successful career someday, start by practicing ethical behavior now.
