In reality, it's a great idea to have the pan dropped off the transmission and have it cleaned. While the pan is off they'll change the transmission filter. The reason for changing the oil is to get rid of worn clutch friction material and any metallic and aluminum trash that has collected in the oil or pan over the past 147,000 miles. The additives in the fluid are pretty much used-up. If you care to know what some of the additives are in automatic transmission fluid are, here's a list:
Dispersants, Anti-Antioxidants Friction Modifiers, Corrosion Inhibitors, *Seal Swell Agent, Viscosity Improver, Pour Point Depresant, Foam Inhibitor, Red Dye.
New transmission fluid and a filter will not make your transmission slip!
