Is it a good idea to unlock my jailbreak and unlock my iphone?

I have an iphone 3g w/ 3.1.2 firmware, and i wanna update it. I read that the update takes away your jailbreak and unlock though (running on tmobile) , and since i bought it jailbroken and unlocked i don't know the risks. Is it worth it?
