Is it a good idea to exercise in the morning?

i'm trying to lose a couple of pounds. i'm already doing 5-6 hours of exercise every week but i was thinking to start cycling in the morning before school. i sleep around 22:00 so i can wake up at 6:00 and go for cycling for 30-45 minutes. i know that i shouldn't eat anything before exercise.
so is it a good idea or will it cost me to energy?
