Yes, this is part of most American adolescents normal development. This is the social norm, jocks=popular, nerds=smart, of course that is not always the case. For example, I was really into art in high school and I was so embarrassed about being in art classes. I did not want my friends to know that I took this elective because there were some people in the class who were "freaks", you know like green hair. Art kids were not important, it was sports that were highly recognized in my high school. Sports=popularity. My friends were on sports team and also referred to me as "{my name} and her art" There were never really any cheerleaders or football players in my art classes. In fact, one year I was mad when some of the popular girls selected art class as an elective in their senior year. I thought to myself "no way, this is my territory" and "ugh, what talent do they not have?"
By the way, my mom always told me I was prettier than all of those popular girls in school, I never believed her. Today, I see what she is saying, I looked back at my yearbook and those girls are nothing special as far as looks. I always thought I was ugly because I was not popular, that is not true at all though. I think this is just part of being an adolescent though.
This really does happen: Throwng nerds into dumpsters, trashcans or toilets. High school pranks, like putting crickets in the school, snakes, animals... couples in bathrooms..Lots of crazy things occured at my high school. My school was the classic jock school, our football team was number 1, I always cheered for the other team though. Oh yeah, you could not walk across the football field during PE because it is so precious and sacred. Rival teams spray painted our football stadium with graffiti and trashed our field. I never took part in the immaturity, thank goodness.
Kids even drove the newest model sports cars to school, especially the jocks. Parking lot was full of nice cars, no one really drove beat up cars.
Yes, Hollywood portrays high school in the US perfectly!
