Is he talking to me as a joke?

There's this guy in one of my summer school classes, and he talks/stares/ smiles at me a lot during the class, and maybe it's just my self esteem issues but he doesn't seem like the type of guy who would take the time to talk to me. He does look over and smile a LOT and occasionally we'll have a conversation about what we're working on. Is he talking to me as a joke, to pass the time, or does he really have some interest in me?
