Is having an exclusive relationship something that you need to discuss?

Sorry I know its a dating question but I'm looking for adult answers ;)
How long do you think you should be with a guy (both grown adults) before it should be exclusive. Do you think this is something that should be discussed or do you think it should be taken for granted if you are having an intimate relationship.

I'm not sure, good question! I heard in the US you discuss it but not other places. My ex and I never really did, it was assumed. Also neither of us had time/effort for anybody else. But after we talked about it and he said he believed exclusivity applied from dating onwards. I suppose I do too. I do have a friend who hooked up with a random after 1-2 dates with her current guy (who will be officially her boyfriend too). I think that's a bit weird. She apparently doesn't think it was wrong, but doesn't want him to know. Hmmmmm

I'm a bit confused by the question, by exclusive do you mean going out with each other and no one else, or starting to date in general?

I think both topics should be discussed at the beginning so there are no misinterpretations with the arrangement, so you both know what to expect. It's best in the long run so noone gets confused or hurt in my opinion.

well it should be that you both know this but sometimes i have heard that you really need to stop and talk about it cause if hes not doing what you are doing then its bad. so i would talk to him about it first and then decided.

There really is no time frame. Some couples move right into being exclusive while others spend months (or even years) dating casually. It depends on the people. However, i would recommend NOT assuming that you are exclusive. Although the talk can be awkward, you need to have it so both of you are clear. Good luck!
