Is Graphic Design/Art & Visual Technology a good field to get into?

I'm a Junior in college but my younger sister will be a freshman during the fall, I'm currently a Government & International politics major. She wants to get a degree in graphic design but our dad is advising her not to do so because there are no jobs with that degree and that she should do something like me. She keeps asking me what she should do and I never know what to say since I have little knowledge about the field. help guys?
