Is Genesis Hebrew Poetry?

I was told by a deacon, now a priest, that Christians aren't fundamentalists, meaning we do not believe in every word the Bible teaches.

Is the story of Adam and Eve, the tree of knowledge, and Lucifer just Hebrew Poetry written to interpret the beginning of the world and the beginning of sin? I'm just curious, because as a Christian I try my best to bring science into the question. I think of Adam and Eve as possibly two of the first tribes or tribe members who met and together disobeyed their conscience or a leader. Possibly?

Genesis is written to explain in a tale, a mythology, the beginnings of the earth, it was not meant to be taken literally.

Yeah yeah thumbs down from all the fundie literalists...look, common sense tells you it isn't literally true - there are two creation stories in one anyway!!

It's a collection of tales, bound together hundreds if not thousands of years after the initial tale was told.
