Is "food poisoning" a serious illness?

I've been pretty sick with vomiting Friday night. Yesterday I got better, but just now I've starting vomiting and have pretty bad diarrhea, and some chills too. I've seen a "drop-in" clinic doctor, who said I had food poisoning and told me it would be over.

But I have an exam tomorrow, and I think if I feel this bad again tomorrow then I'd like to get a deferral. HOWEVER, the exam starts at the same time as opening of the doctor's office, so I don't know if I should:

1. Try to go get a sick note (if I don't get one, then I might fail my final). The university website said "serious" illness, but does re-occurring food poisoning count? As in, I'm not on my death-bed or have a raging fever/contagious disease.

2. Go to the exam and leave for the restroom every other minute, while managing massive gastric pain.

Basically, will the doctors give me a sick note, and will it be approved by the university? (Our professors apparently have no say in this.)
