Is fish tank gravel or similar a good alternitive to sand for leopard geckos?

I own a year and a half old leopard gecko that recently became impacted with calci-sand. I am trying to make some alterations to help prevent this again. I to not wish to use carpet or paper because he loves to dig so that would be my last resort. (also, are heating rocks safe? My friend has them for his beardies and they love it but I have heard claims against them. And r the night bulbs effective or do they disturb the animal?). Thanks :)
 
1. i dont think theres another substrate that u can get with him digging and without him getting impacted at the same time.

2. heat rocks are not safe they can eventualy end up burning the leopard geckos and hurting them.

3. the night bulb would not bother the leopard gecko as long as u get a red one they cant see red the most it would do is bother u if u sleep in the same room as the gecko.
